Markham residents, Diana's Oyster Bar & Grill has a 2nd location to make your seafood dreams come true!

Diana's Oyster Bar and Grill

Diana’s Seafood in Scarborough has been an institution offering fresh seafood at low prices. About a decade ago, the seafood purveyor expanded to include a restaurant near the site and just this year a second Diana’s Oyster Bar and Grill has been added to the delight of Markham residents.

Fresh seafood but cheap? Seems like an oxymoron given low prices normally implies items that are frozen and defrosted. Diana’s is able achieve to achieve both as they also have a wholesale and retail arm where they purchase in bulk and essentially cut out the middle person; in fact, they are the supplier to many other Toronto hotels and restaurants.

Oyster lovers rejoice, they have a huge selection that changes with the seasons. At the new Markham location, all are prominently displayed on the oyster bar in the middle, ready to be freshly shucked and slurped down.

For those who don’t like the raw mollusks, Diana’s has plenty of cooked options - I was stuffed to the gills from all the great eats sampled at their grand opening party. The sole oyster I tried was a baked version where it had just been cooked through and topped with bacon pieces. With no other seasoning but the natural saltiness of the oyster’s juices, it was enough.

The lobster slider was fantastic, chunks of sweet lobster just moistened slightly with a light citrusy mayo on a toasted brioche bun with crunchy lettuce. Move over lobster rolls, I could easily eat three of these any day!

Of course Diana also served the fried appetizer favourites: calamari and crab cakes. The later were crispy nuggets of predominantly crab meat with finely chopped vegetables studded throughout. Talk about all meat and no filler.

As the summer months grace the city, the cool salmon or tuna tartare is refreshing – gem-sized cubes of fish tossed in sesame oil and soy.

Or slices of their lovely house-smoked fish may be in order. I’ve never been a fan of smoked salmon but it wasn’t overly oaky at Diana’s and the white fish version had a great creamy texture that may have converted me.

There’s also the “Grill” side of the restaurant, which I’ve been advised creates some of their best-selling dishes. The seafood mixed grill composed of salmon, shrimp and scallops is popular; at the party I had a taste of the juicy medium-done grilled salmon and can see why it satisfies. And they’re not all about seafood, there’s also a Black Angus striploin that’s popular well-liked too.

Honestly, everything consumed at their grand opening event was delicious leaving me wanting more. Despite being stuffed, the heavenly smelling salmon slider called to me for one last (alright maybe three) bite. The patty was made from large chunks of salmon combined with vegetables and spices.

Oh and there really is a Diana: a small quiet Greek women who has turned their initial business into a budding empire. Congratulations Diana on the second location and for bringing the reasonably priced fresh seafood to those living north of Steeles Avenue!

The Re-Birth of Coco Lezzone in Yorkville

Coco Lezzone Toronto

Coco Lezzone has recently moved from their Little Italy location and into Yorkville and celebrated with a Re-birth party. Operating since 1994, diners have been accustomed to their Italian creations served in a swanky lounge environment – this isn’t Nonna’s house. The new Yorkville location carries on the tradition with a large bar at the entrance and an open space dining room that’s great for large groups and cocktail events.

During the launch party, I sampled a number of dishes that would work well for such events (dinner menu prices included for reference). Margherita ($17) and diavolo ($19) pizzas were wispy and thin with a flavourful sauce and tons of cheese. The diavolo is what I’d normally order, topped with salty capicollo and a jalapeno for kick and flourish.

Skewered meat balls ($15) lend themselves for easy eating. Tender and moist, they weren’t overly salty so could be eaten as an appetizer without pasta.

For cocktail gatherings, I’d also suggest having the deep fried spice prawn, which I couldn’t find on their menu but was hot and delicious.

The fried calamari ($15) was cut thinner than I’d like but had a great non-greasy breading. Meanwhile, if you prefer something healthier, the grilled octopus ($16) was meaty and satisfying paired with a red onion, caper and red wine vinaigrette.

An intimate dining room is situated at the back of the restaurant if you prefer privacy. The circular format table was a smart choice to allow for family style sharing.

Coco Lezzone’s menu isn’t all about the small plates, they have plenty of traditional mains as well. Although my picture of the osso buco ($29) doesn’t look the most appealing, the veal was well braised and contained an ample amount of bone marrow. Also, the accompanying saffron risotto was substantial enough to stand up against the rich veal braising liquid.

Little Italy’s loss is now Yorkville’s gain. Coco Lezzone is now satisfying diners with their traditional Italian creations, with a hip cocktail on the side. Aperol spritzer anyone?

You're Invited to Party with The Addisons

The Addisons Toronto

The Addisons Residence has taken over C-Lounge and gutted the interior to make it into a retro Beverly Hills home. Although it still looks industrial-like from the outside, upon entering you can see the transformation. The changes are courtesy of designer Lisa Ho, of Lisa Ho Studios. The entrance resembles a foyer with a bright LA feel.

As you wind through the hallway you end up in a large kitchen & dining room area, which inevitably like all homes is the area people like to conjugate in and mingle. Other rooms to the venue include a large living area and rec room.

Opened Wednesday to Saturday, the venue offers their own events (karaoke Wednesdays, DJ Thursdays, live band Fridays and party Saturdays) or can be rented out (by room or the entire venue) for private events.

It’s an interesting concept for this new King West lounge: you’re invited to an awesome house party and the back story is that the Addisons throw spectacular parties. It’s a grown-up house party complete with delicious cocktails but still playful enough that the “rec room” has a foosball table and shuffleboard.

During their launch party, I was able to try a couple of cocktails. An easy going drink for the summer months is their strawberry sangria ($50 for a punch bowl) made with white wine, rum, strawberry lemonade and cut up fruit. Sweet and refreshing, you wouldn’t think you’re even drinking alcohol.

For something interesting, try the Smoked Heat ($13) made with mezcal, grapefruit juice, lime and bitters and then spiced with jalapeno. It also starts off easy as the citrus taste is apparent first, but then the bitter and spicy elements hit for a unique finish.

The patio will be transformed into a backyard oasis. Unfortunately, it wasn’t opened during the launch party, but the Addisons notes they will be offering slushy drinks to help beat the rare Toronto heat waves.

The venue also offers food, courtesy of the Food Dudes, so while you rest in one of their many sitting areas you can enjoy a bite. At the opening party, they featured a hearty spread of juicy fried chicken, aromatic pierogies, chicken wings and tons of delicious salads.

There’s a grown-up feel to the lounge and the home environment offers an inviting and relaxing feel. And like a house party, I've been advised there will be no cover charge or dress code at the Addisons. Welcome to the neighbourhood!

Fresh Burger is opening and giving out free burgers! (Toronto)

Address: 542 Church Street
Website: http://www.fresh-burger.com/

Unless you live or work in Richmond Hill, you've likely never encountered Fresh Burger. Certainly, they have many satisfied customers, so much so that it was declared Yelp's 2014 Best Burger Restaurant.

They are now bringing their "honest burger experience" to downtown at their new Church and Wellesley location. And Torontonians you're in for a treat as they will be giving out free burgers from 6 - 7:30pm on Friday, November 28th during their grand opening event. If you're looking for a later dinner, there will be a 2-for-1 special after 7:30 until 11pm.

Although I've never tried Fresh Burger myself, I'm aiming to drop by that evening to indulge in their freshly ground burger. The menu is simple - they offer "fresh" (4 oz) and "prime" (6 oz) sizes and should you want a meat overload feel free to double any of the pattys. They are classically adorned with lettuce, tomato, cheese (no upgrade required) and their secret sauce. But, you can add onions and pickles as well along with other supplementary toppings.

There's also a poutine that should help to complete the meal. You didn't hear it from me, but a little birdie told me they also have a secret menu consisting of an Aloha burger, bacon mushroom melt and California fries (these in particular intrigue me).

Since they're opening in November their patio won't be of any use, but would be a great place to eat during the summer months. So, if I've wet your appetite, visit Fresh Burger on November 28th to try a free burger on them!
