What's better than Cena in Famiglia?

It seems like every culture has a tradition or holiday that gathers families for a meal. Whether it's to celebrate or instill a custom, everything is better amongst loved ones and with food. That’s why Villa Charities Foundation is launching their Cena in Famiglia event (translates to family dinner) to help raise funds to continue their promotion of Italian heritage and everything that embodies the culture.

Villa Charities was first established in 1971 to provide affordable and quality long-term care to elderly Italian-Canadians. Villa Colombo, a long-term care facilities steeped with Italian culture, was created and soon expanded into four more facilities. As the charity grew, so did their mandate and in later decades they’ve added a community centre and now strives to be the voice of the Italian Canadian community.

Having grown up with a number of Italian friends, the Sunday “suppers” are an impressive and warming affair. On Sunday, August 25th, Villa Charities will throw their own Sunday meal where guests will dine outdoors at Sala Caboto Gardens. The event begins at 2pm with a cocktail reception complete with food stations where you’ll get a group photo to commemorate the occasion.

Don’t fill up at the stations as a 3-course meal follows where you’ll be sure to get a taste of the Italian culture. If that weren’t enough, you’ll be entertained with music during the whole affair. For the brave, it’s your chance to polka!

The event ends by 5:30pm so there’s plenty of time to relax, nap, and digest all the food before the weekend is over. So whether you go with one person or gather a full table of eight, Cena in Famiglia will leave you full and satisfied knowing you’ll be supporting Villa Charities Foundation programs.

Thanks to the folks at Villa Charities Foundation, Gastro World is giving away a pair of tickets (valued at $200) to the event!

Entries will be accepted until August 18, 2019 at 12:00 AM. Sometime the following day, I will contact winners through email with further details. Accordingly, please make sure you enter a valid email address in Rafflecopter contest site. Good luck!

#Contest: Spoil a loved one with Days of Wine & Chocolate in #NOTL this February!

Stumped on what to do to celebrate Valentine's? If your loved one enjoys chocoate and wine, taking them on a day/weekend trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake is the perfect gift. Over weekends in February, twenty wineries across the region are pairing their delicious wine with a chocolate delight. Having looked through the listing, a few stuck out in particular:

  • With the cold weather, what could be toastier than a lovely lobster bisque topped with white chocolate shavings and a glass of Chardonnay Reserve from Rancourt?
  • Strewn seems to be serving an entire meal with their merlot paired with a savoury chocolate trio: mushroom with chocolate sauce, cocoa dusted pork, and potato chip dipped in dark chocolate.
  • I love ribs! Pondview's glazing pork back ribs with a chocolate infused BBQ sauce and serving it with a glass of their Bella Terra Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Having attended a similar event in 2017, Sip and Sizzle, it was a great time - eating and drinking the day away at so many wineries.

You can experience a similar tasty day every weekend in February (Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays). Pick up the touring passport for $45 (plus taxes and fees) or a designated driver’s version for $25 (plus taxes and fees) that includes non-alcoholic drinks and you’re entitled to a taste of food and drink at each of the 20 participating wineries, valid all month long.

The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake want to give a Gastro World reader a chance to experience it themselves. The winner will receive two passes (valued at $90 plus taxes and fees) to use anytime during the event. Please note, transportation and accommodations are not included. Simply enter below.

Entries will be accepted until January 29, 2018 at 12:00 AM. Sometime the following day, I will contact winners through email with further details. Accordingly, please make sure you enter a valid email address in Rafflecopter contest site. Cheers!

CONTEST: Win a pair of passes to the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo!

The Gourmet Food and Wine Expo ("GFWE") has got to be the largest food and drink event of the season. Occupying the Metro Convention Centre and entering its 23rd year vouches for GFWE's prominence and popularity.

Their extensive list of exhibitors ensures that no one will be hungry or thirsty. Despite the name, in terms of liberations, they offer more than just wine - beer, cider, spirits, and non-alcoholic options are available as well! But, they've also included travel operators and other service providers in case you need a brief non-indulging break.

Thanks to the folks at GFWE, Gastro World is giving away two pairs a tickets (valued at between $40-$80 for the pair) that can be used any day of the show!

Entries will be accepted until November 11, 2017 at 12:00 AM. Sometime the following day, I will contact winners through email with further details. Accordingly, please make sure you enter a valid email address in Rafflecopter contest site. Good luck!

You can Taste the Season in NOTL this November with this #contest!

As Mother Nature gives it bounty, you can enjoy what the land has to offer with wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake with their annual Taste the Season event. Twenty wineries across the region are serving up holiday appropriate bites with a taste of their VQA wines.

Having attended a similar event in the spring, Sip and Sizzle, it was a great time - hiring a touring company to bring my husband and around as I ate and drank the day away. Here are some of the highlights of what we sampled, you can get the complete re-cap here.

Since Peller Estates was one of the first stops, we were spoiled by the full-sized wild boar sausage – you’re not leaving hungry. The gaminess of the wild boar was mellowed with grainy maple Dijon mustard and the salty crispy shallots were an excellent addition. With an equally generous pour of the 2015 Private Reserve Gamay Noir ($19.95), which pairs nicely with the meatiness of the dish, we could have stayed at the winery longer if they had tables to lounge in.

Chรขteau des Charmes had the most optimal pairing, in my opinion. Their 2016 Sauvignon Blanc ($14.95) was not quite as tart and mellow in a refreshing way. The creaminess of the citrus aioli on the cold sweet grilled shrimp and the strong herbs in the shoot and sprout salad went nicely with the light wine.

I even discovered something new while making return visits given the Sip and Sizzle tastings were often held in areas separated from the traditional tasting rooms. The best location goes to Ravine Vineyards: guests head downstairs to cellar’s private dining area where curing meats hang in a climate controlled room and barrels filled with aging wine line the walls.

You can experience a similar tasty day every weekend in November (Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays). Pick up the touring passport for $45 (plus taxes and fees) or a designated driver’s version for $25 (plus taxes and fees) that includes non-alcoholic drinks and you’re entitled to a taste of food and drink at each of the 20 participating wineries, valid all month long.

CONTEST: Win 1 of 5 pairs of passes to the Lobster Clam Jam (Toronto)

The crack of a shell, whiff of sea salt, and the briny sweet juices... these are things I envision with seafood. The vibrant red lobster, glistening oyster, or pale pink scallops - how does food look so beautiful?

This Victoria Day weekend, Lobster Clam Jam is pulling up at the Cabana Pool Bar and hulling  a bounty of seafood for all ages. The outdoor food festival prides itself with being family-friendly with children activities (think bouncy castles and face painting) along with adult pleasing libations.

Although Lobster Clam Jam is making its Toronto debut in 2017, it’s been held in Montreal for the past four years and even proclaimed by Food Network Canada as “one of the top Canadian food festivals to visit this summer”.

Guests will sample seafood creations from restaurants in Toronto and Montreal. Having dined at Patria, Weslodge, Blowfish, Buonanotte and the O&B restaurants, they certainly have a lot of shellfish dishes. Other participants include Jae Anthony of Seasoned Dreams, Notre Dame Gourmet, Queue de Cheval Steakhouse and Raw Bar, Buster’s Sea Cove, The Food Dudes, Bac Ky Pho and more.

To wash down all the seafood, aside from beer and wine, they will also be selling signature mojitos and bloody Caesares. When you need a break, dance to music spun by DJ Eddie Lewis and DJ Chris Laroque.

Interesting in going? Here are the details:

  • May 20 & 21, 2017
  • $25 for an admission ticket, but free for children 12 years of age and under
  • Clam tokens can be purchased for $3 each and redeemed for food dishes (between $6-$12) or drinks ($6)
  • Portion of proceeds will be donated to the Starlight Children's Foundation and Sick Kids

Great news! INK Entertainment has given me FIVE pairs of tickets to giveaway to Gastro World readers, where you and a guest will receive FREE admission to the event for a day of your choosing (valued at $25). It does not include any of the Clam tokens.

Entries will be accepted until May 15, 2017 at 12:00 AM. Sometime the following day, I will contact winners through email with further details. Accordingly, please make sure you enter a valid email address in Rafflecopter contest site. Good luck!

CoCo Fresh Tea and Juice (Toronto)

As a teenager, I thought drinking bubble tea would be a fad. Just like Orbitz, a juice with small spheres of fruit floating throughout, its popularity would wane once consumers got over the novelty of having food in their drinks. Yet, my psychic abilities are non-existent, thankfully, and consumption is still going strong.

Although the drink didn’t arrive in Toronto until the mid-1990’s, it was developed in 1988 when a product development manager at Chun Shui Tang (a Taiwanese teahouse) added sweetened tapioca pudding to their tea and the company loved it so much they started selling it!

For those not in the know, at its simplest, bubble tea is the combination of sweetened tea with a food additive, which isn’t necessarily tapioca (although it’s the most popular choice). In fact, the “bubble” in the name has nothing to do with these pearls, but rather the foamy bubbles floating on top that’s developed through the shaking process.

Nowadays the drink and topping options seem endless. At CoCo Fresh Tea and Juice, refreshing juices are added in the base and even chopped fresh fruit on top. Nevertheless, there’s something about the tried and true ingredients that still draw people in. Over March, as fans were voting for their favourite drinks, with the exception of passion fruit juice, the winners had scarcely a fruit in sight.

Although a little sweet at first, despite getting the drink at 50% sugariness, the Bubble GaGa ($4.20 for regular or $4.70 for large) is rather refreshing with its passion fruit and green tea base. It’d be great for the warmer months as one begins to crave something tropical since it also incorporates coconut jelly with the tapioca.

But my favourite has to be the 3 Guys ($5 for regular or $5.50 for large), a simple milk tea with three toppings: tapioca, pudding and grass jelly! The tapioca provides that requisite chewiness and the grass jelly an interesting herbal property to the tea. Yet, it’s the pudding, an ingredient I’ve never tried, that’s most surprising adding a silky creaminess when you get a bite with the drink.

The longevity of bubble tea is outstanding, so much so, that the global CoCo franchise turned 20 in April. During this milestone, they’re offering their patrons a few perks:
  • The two top drinks noted above are on sale for April where you can get the large for just $3.80.
  • During April share a photo of CoCo’s tea using hashtag #CoCo20th on any social media platform and that’s your entry towards their contest for winning one month of free CoCo products (that’s one a day)! There will be five winners and to help you along the way, CoCo has photo booths set up in Ontario locations.
Happy birthday CoCo Fresh Tea and good luck to all. May the bubbles be with you.

Disclaimer: The above drinks were complimentary. Rest assured, as noted in my mission statement, I will always provide an honest opinion.

CONTEST: Win two passes to the Toronto Luxury Chocolate Show!

Chocolate, the sweet (and now often savoury) treat that evokes emotions in its eaters. Some say it's better than sex, others tout the health benefits of having a square of dark chocolate daily, while Forest Gump compares it to life itself.

Regardless of your thoughts, if you're interested in the ingredient, you should visit the Toronto Luxury Chocolate Show. Gathering various high end chocolatiers into one marketplace, guests are invited to head over to vendors to ask questions and sample their crafts. There will also be live demonstrations, throughout the day, showcasing ideas on how to jazz up chocolate for the upcoming holiday season - oh I can only imagine how lovely the Rotunda room of the Roy Thomson Hall will smell!

Every year there's a bit more added to the show. Similar to past exhibitions, you can try creating the treat at one of their free chocolate making classes or take on the champs in their chocolate eating competition. If you're like me and love to eat, I can't wait to test out the dishes our city's chefs will be whipping up with the ingredient. Perhaps, I'll even sign up for one of their wine pairing sessions for an extra decadent boost.

However, this year they're offering even more things for chocolate lovers:
  • Partake in chocolate painting classes - kept family friendly of course.
  • Create and customize  your own quarter pound chocolate bar - just imagine how happy the recipient of this gift would be!
  • Support SickKids by building a chocolate bridge.
If you're feeling lucky, head over the the Wonderful Wonka Wheel where you'll get a chance to find one of the Golden Tickets, which grants you a trip to a secret chocolate factory. If only it were like the movie and I could float across a chocolate river and meet an Oompa Loompa.

The best thing is no one leaves empty handed. Included with every admission is a gift bag filled with chocolate products that's valued at the price of the ticket or more. Additionally, each general admission ticket already includes five sample tickets so you always have a chance to try something that isn't complimentary.

If you want to join in for the day of fun, you can head to their website to purchase tickets. Be sure to use the discount code AWCS16 to get a $5 discount off the admission price.

CONTEST: Win 1 of 6 pairs of passes to the Gentlemen's Expo

Philosopher John Locke has a great description about gentlemen: “Education begins the gentlemen, but reading, good company and reflection must finish him.”

Despite being deceased for centuries, how could the Father of Liberalism fathom that one day The Gentlemen’s Expo, an annual Toronto show, will attempt to educate while entertaining men (and women) on subjects related to a gentlemen’s lifestyle. Guests bring their friends and loved ones and by the end can reflect on the good life.

Set in the cavernous Metro Convention Centre, there’s something for everyone. What has me the most intrigued is the Underground Chef Co. Battle! This year’s “O.G. Addition” brings in the big guns including chef’s Ted Reader (Ted's World Famous BBQ) and Jeff Dueck (2ndFloor Events) where they’ll have one-hour to create several dishes from secret ingredients. Hosted by Joe Friday along with comedian Mike Ward, I’m sure there will be some laughs as well.

On their main stage, discussion panels will bring together Krista Faist (editor of the new Foodism TO), Kevin Brauch from the Thirsty Traveller, and Chef Amanda Ray from Biff''s Bistro. Here’s hoping Robert Rainford will be demonstrating his barbequing techniques live - bonus points to The Gentlemen’s Expo if they’re able to re-create the slow-motion food shots highlighted with porn music that’s so famously used in his show License to Grill.

For those who are preparing for Movember or sport the trendy beards, grooming companies such as 19 Fifties, Always Bearded, Hairy Face Beard Oils will be offering plenty of products to make your hairy feature look presentable for work.

Cosmetic giants Clinique For Men and Lab Series will be creating a spa so you get the full experience of their products (all capped off with a drink after you’re finished). Maybe they can expand my husband’s skin care routine past washing with water and applying a face cream.

With the holidays around the corner, there’s plenty of retail therapy – I’m sure you can guess what the following companies sell: Shirt Studs, Lord of Ties and Just White Shirts. Somehow I’ll need to sneak away and get my husband some Christmas socks from the wacky Hot Sox.

Of course, you have to be well fed and hydrated to really take in all the information. Dixon’s Distilled Spirits, Treasury Wine Estates, and Samuel Adams are just some of the companies that will make sure you have your fill of cocktails, wines, and beer. Meanwhile, there are tons of nibbles from Oyster Boy, Hank Daddy’s BBQ, and Caplansky’s Delicatessen (just to name a few).

If you prefer to get active, the Expo has an array of activities to keep guests entertained - from sports simulators, Yamaha Music's garage band (where there will be instruments for you to jam on), and their Den that will house ping pong, pool tables, and foosball. My sights are set on the Bag Jump, a 30 foot scaffold that you take a leap of faith from into the giant inflatable bag. Something I’ll have to try after a few drinks… but before plates of food.

CLOSED: Little Fin now serves breakfast and they have a contest

When it comes to a quick breakfast, food court establishments have generally been the go-to and sometimes only option for eaters. For those working or residing in the Toronto downtown core, you now have another choice: Little Fin is currently opened earlier and serving breakfast weekdays from 8-11am.

All are freshly made and in under ten minutes I was presented with a piping hot (Egg) White Wrapper ($5.50); all prepped to go should a dash to the office be in order. In my case, I chose to give myself a break and enjoy the wrap at Little Fin – they have a few tables and numerous bar stool seats in the store.

Wrapped in the well-grilled whole wheat tortilla was an egg white omelette, fresh spinach (normally kale) and a hash brown that added a great crunch. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting the “healthy” sounding breakfast to be very flavourful, but the layer of soft goat cheese and drizzle of slightly spicy sauce (it seems to be the same as what's on the po’boy) made the wrap delicious!

It was a tough decision first thing in the morning. After seeing the chicken and waffles sandwich ($6.50) on Instagram, the thick piece of fried chicken with the waffles as the “bread” was calling to me. And I was really hungry so the the Ultimate Brek-Fin Sandwich ($7) would have also been nice: slices of peameal bacon combined with a fried egg, hash brown, cheese, avocado, tomato and lettuce on a toasted sesame bun.

Ultimate Brek-Fin Sandwich (courtesy of Little Fin)
Yet with a beach vacation around the corner, I refrained myself and was thoroughly satisfied with the egg white wrap. For those who’d like seafood for breakfast, Little Fin also offers a smoked salmon bagel ($6).

Smoked salmon bagel (courtesy of Little Fin)
Additionally, to celebrate the launch, Little Fin is running a contest:
  • Post a photo of your Little Fin breakfast
  • Use the hash tags #anyfinispossible and #finfanbrakfast and tag them in the photo
On April 8th they’ll select a winner to win free breakfast every Monday for a month! What a great way to beat the Monday blues and also try all four of their tasty sounding sandwiches.

Disclaimer: The above breakfast wrap was complimentary. Rest assured, as noted in my mission statement, I will always provide my honest opinion - for you and the restaurant's sakes.

Did You Hear? Menchie's Canada is Having a Contest!

When Danna and Adam Caldwell opened their first Menchie’s store in LA, little did they know the frozen yoghurt establishment would become a worldwide name! With a rotating 128 flavours – in April a new one, Skor, will soon be available – customers are able to mix and match the yoghurt bases with more than 50 toppings to create their own custom blend. Moreover, their gluten-free, vegan and Kosher options ensures most dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Toppings range from fresh fruit (berries, a tropical selection and melons) to candies (chocolate and gummi bears) and other interesting choices (sprinkles, cookies and cheesecake). My favourite are the mini peanut butter cups and popping boba, although not generally part of the same cup.

Not to rest on their laurels, Menchies continues to develop new products including custom made cakes and real fruit smoothies … so you won’t feel guilty about stopping into a store before noon.

This spring Menchies is encouraging Canadians to SMILE! After all, the sun and warm weather will soon be gracing us and enjoying the outdoors is but weeks away.
